In practice the need to use a defined corpus as the material for description is no longer entirely accepted. No corpus will contain everything that the linguist should include in his description. Most linguists would now accept that this principle is satisfied if the linguist supports his analyses with extensive data. To have a corpus available might be valuable for the linguist who needs to check his hypotheses, but he does not need to restrict himself to examples drawn from it. It is in any case probably more fruitful for him to submit his analyses to other linguists.
